Every person in the present society is suffering some mental illness. Not only that, in the time of the Buddha too.  That’s why Buddha renounces the kingship and be a monk. Then He Understand that how to stop this suffering and attend to wisdom or free from all suffering. According to the Buddhism Human being mean a complex of both Psychological and physiological elements. Buddhism categorized all human problems in to two parts.
Mental problems
Physical problem
According to Unguttata NIkaya, Buddha says
‘’ Dwe me Bhikkawe roga. Katame dwe?
Kaika roga cetasika rogo’’
The Buddha is the best Psychiatry in this world forever.  That’s why we recognized him as “Sakka katta”
Mental illness mean bad out comes faced by every average person such as –
  • ·         Physiological illness
  • ·         Psychological illness
  • ·         Ethical problems
  • ·         Para – Psychological problems

Avery person who living in this society he must face one of these problems or more.
Buddhism recognize this illness as “ Dukka” We can’t find a very suitable word for this term “Dukka” in English Language. But there are some words for it. Like –
  • ·         Unhappy
  • ·         Unsatisfactory
  • ·         Distress
  • ·         Discomfort
  • ·         Dissatisfaction

But one of those words can’t give the real meaning of “ Dukka”
In the final analysis, Buddhism understands three forms of mental illness.
  • ·         Mental illness coursed by psychological reasons
  • ·         Mental illness coursed by physical reasons

What is Buddhist counseling?

‘’Text book tell us that scientific psychology was founded by Wilhelm Wundt in the latter half of the nineteenth century in Germany. However they are wrong! It was founded two thousand five hundred years earlier, in India by prince Siddhartha, The Buddha.’’

‘’There is a pressing need for western psychotherapy to gain an accurate understanding of Buddhist therapy, and for Buddhist therapy to acquire scientific recognition. If it did so, it could rapidly become the major world-wide treatment for common mental disorder.’’

‘’When Buddhist therapy is compared with western psychotherapy, rather close parallels can be seen. It seems that interview and discussion therapy such as psychoanalysis, parallels the preparatory discussion which usually occur between the guru and the pupil in Buddhist therapy. Meditation itself seems to parallel very closely the most common technique of behaviors therapy. There are some vital aspects of meditation, however which remain unique to Buddhism.’’

-----Robert H. Thouslass ----
‘’I think that primitive Buddhism must be understand as a system of psychotherapy’’
There is a very good example about value of Buddhist psychology.

Anagarika Dharmapala of Sri Lanka in his third visit to America (1902-1904) attended to a lecture by Professor William James at Harvard University. William Jams recognizing Dharmapala dressed in his yellow robe and seated in the hall, said,

‘’ take my chair, you are better equipped to lecture on psychology than I’’

Dharmapala tool the challenge and gave a talk outlining the major doctrine of Buddhism. After the talk, Professor James turned to his class and announced,

‘’ This is the psychology everybody will be studying twenty-five years from now’’

According to Buddhist text, the word closest to Counseling is ‘’ Upadisati ’’ ( noun upadesa). There are many nominal and forms denoting the Buddha’s career as teacher, counselor and guide. Among the verbs ‘’ advices’’ ( ovada ) ‘’teaches’’ ( anusasati ) ‘’ declares ‘’ ( deseti) and ‘’point out’’ ( adisati ) can be cited. In an often recurring stock phrase, the Buddha’s scheme of teaching is described as ‘’ he proclaims ( acikkati ) declares ( deseti ) reveals ( pannapeti) set forth ( pannapeti ) explains ( vivarati ) analyses ( lays bare ( uddanikoroti ) as ‘’ behold ’’ ( passatha )

Definitions

Buddhist family therapy is based on resolving issues before they turn into nasty conflicts. It’s an approach based on problem prevention rather that conflict resolution. It addresses the root causes and effect and finds ways to prevent issues from becoming a conflict. If the husband and wife attend to their duties and responsibilities, their family experiences harmony and progress. This is the balance or the equilibrium conductive for the family to grow.
‘’ Buddhist counseling psychology can be define as problem prevention rather than conflict resolution.’’
